Askania-Nova biospheric reserve was founded in 1828. When one representative of the German lineage bought these lands for cheap for the aims of sheep breeding. The name “Askania-Nova” (i.e. New Askania) was given to a reserve some time later, and a zoo was started to be built in the second half of the 19th century and was opened in 1886.
The animals lead their regular lifestyle on the territory of the reserve, as in cages, so in wild. The fauna reserve has more than 1 000 representatives. There are spacious cages in the zoo for the animals, the space is much more than enough for them. Tourists may also feed animals with those that the guide advises and only under his/her strict control.
